Celebrate the warmer temperatures outdoors with good company and great food.
July is National Picnic Month and here in Southwold we have plenty of locations in which this summer tradition can be enjoyed with friends and family. We’ve included our favourite picnic spots below which we hope you will give a try whilst visiting this beautiful town.
South Green
South Green is one of our favourite spots to enjoy a family picnic with its wonderful views towards the sea without risk of sand in your sandwiches! The Red Lion pub is located just off South Green so you can enjoy a chilled Adnams ale or two whilst tucking into your feast.
The Beach
Likely to be the most popular picnic location in the whole of the town is of course Southwold’s sandy beach. To the south of the Pier is where you’ll find plenty of sand to lay out your picnic rug plus there are various kiosks dotted along the way for a delicious ice cream to finish off your meal.
Why not make your beach picnic even more enjoyable by hiring one of Southwold’s beautiful beach huts to enjoy it from? With many huts having gas stoves, kettles and comfortable furniture, a picnic can be fully enjoyed whilst taking in the most beautiful view of the sea.
Hospital Green
One of Southwold’s lesser-known locations is a wonderfully peaceful spot in which to enjoy a picnic. Located close by to St Edmunds Church this large, grassed area is spacious and well-kept surrounded by beautiful trees and hedges. There are benches within Hospital Green plus if you wish to add any local produce to your picnic The Canteen, Southwold’s newest café/restaurant, is located within a stone’s throw.
Tibby’s Green
A great choice for those with a young family is Tibby’s Green to the side of St Edmunds Church. This fun play park features swings, climbing frames, football goals and much more exciting play equipment to keep children amused. There is plenty of space to choose from to indulge in a picnic and there are a number of picnic benches dotted across the park. From this location the High Street shops are just stroll away.
The Common
Last but certainly not least is Southwold’s lush Common. Throughout the summer season you’ll see many families picnicking here as it’s such a lovely vast area in which to relax. Watch the world go by and enjoy views across the marshland towards Walberswick and beyond, with the bustling High Street within easy reach for a few last-minute yummy essentials!
